How Can I be Better at Live Videos?: Coaching with Keva
In this week's episode of Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking, Kirsten has a live mini-coaching session with Keva of Le Departique, a fashion and art boutique. Although Keva is a skilled speaker, she wanted tips for doing live videos on social media.
Key take-aways:
- If you are recording on your phone, listen to the playback with earbuds or headphones
- Do not underestimate the value of a really good green screen
- Before going into a full video production process, start with the equipment you have so you can evaluate what you really need

Welcome to Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking, the podcast,
Kirsten:and today, the coaching session.
Kirsten:Today, we've got a coaching session with Keva.
Kirsten:Welcome to the show.
Kirsten:I'm so glad you're here.
Keva:Thank you so much for having me.
Keva:I'm so excited to be here
So, so for those of you who are listening, this is actually
Kirsten:our second pass of this, because the software just completely hiccuped.
Kirsten:So, that's why we're cracking up, is because we've done all this before.
Kirsten:So Keva, go ahead and tell everybody about what it is that you do.
Keva:Okay, so my name is Keva and I have a company by the name of Le Departique.
Keva:It's a women's online boutique at the moment, women's clothing.
Keva:It's gonna be an art and fashion mobile boutique that I'm currently building.
Keva:It's taken a while, but I am definitely continuing this journey to the
Keva:end, regardless of what happens.
Keva:And then eventually, I'll have a brick and mortar location, but I'm gonna also
Keva:have my trucks, so I'm gonna have both.
Keva:That's what I do now, and I'm also a teacher.
Keva:Until I can make this dream come true
What do you teach?
Keva:I teach art to high school students.
Kirsten:Okay, fantastic.
Kirsten:So, for this particular thing, for presenting and speaking, public
Kirsten:speaking isn't really a problem, because you're already a teacher.
Kirsten:So this is more tips and tricks around possibly doing a Live, yes?
Keva:Yes, that's correct.
Kirsten:Okay.
Kirsten:So have, let me ask you the million dollar question.
Kirsten:How are you at taking selfies?
Keva:You know, I have that same pose every time, with the head
Keva:tilt and the neck looking forward, with a side profile type of look.
Keva:I have that.
Keva:Typical, but not a, not a straightforward, kind of a old school
Keva:Hollywood glam type of, doey eye.
Kirsten:Oh, that sounds
Keva:Oh, doey eyed?
Kirsten:Oh, that sounds good.
Kirsten:I have, I need to see that.
Kirsten:You're gonna need to send me a photo when this is done,
Keva:I have one.
Kirsten:Because that sounds really good.
Keva:That's excellent.
Kirsten:So, the reason I ask, is because I was at a conference and I met
Kirsten:a woman who is amazingly good at selfies, which I am historically not.
Kirsten:And so I was taking pictures of myself and I was holding my
Kirsten:phone essentially straight arm out, right in front of my face.
Kirsten:And I've never liked how those looked.
Kirsten:And she, when I was taking a picture with her, she goes, "Could
Kirsten:I give you a little guidance?"
Kirsten:And I said, "Yes, please."
Kirsten:So she actually pushed my arm up, so that essentially my arm was about where my
Kirsten:forehead is and tilted it down a little.
Kirsten:And she said, "Try to get the top of your head essentially into the top of
Kirsten:the frame so that you're seeing your full face, and it's also angled a little
Kirsten:bit down to, to you, and you look up and directly into it and you smile."
Kirsten:And it's the best selfie I took at any conference this year.
Keva:Wow
Kirsten:So, I think my first piece of advice is going to be try doing some
Kirsten:different Lives of yourself where you record with different hand positions for
Kirsten:a minute or two, and then go look at it and see if that's the look that you want.
Keva:That's great.
Keva:I'm gonna do that.
Kirsten:Because I think that will help.
Kirsten:And also, lighting is an issue and audio is an issue.
Kirsten:So, wherever you're going to be doing this, if you can find a similar
Kirsten:space and do some practice runs, that would help, because then you're not
Kirsten:doing it for the first time and are back lit, which most people end up
Kirsten:being backlit without realizing it.
Kirsten:And then it throws off the colors, and it throws off your brightness, and it
Kirsten:just makes everything kind of worse.
Kirsten:Now, that's if you're planning on doing it just sort of rolling.
Kirsten:Were you planning on using your phone?
Kirsten:Did you wanna get some serious equipment?
Kirsten:What are your thoughts around that?
Keva:Well, initially, I would probably start with my phone, but I would
Keva:like to graduate to the next level.
Kirsten:Mm-hmm
Keva:Because I really don't want, that's another thing that's,
Keva:be like a hesitation, is I want it to be done a certain way.
Keva:So I want the lighting to be a certain way, and I don't know
Kirsten:Yeah
Keva:That camera, the cell phone is gonna to give me exactly I'm looking
Keva:for, but, you know, sometimes you just have to launch things ugly, I guess.
Keva:But not too ugly, because I want
Kirsten:Mmmhmm
Keva:people to be able to see my clothing, but, so
Keva:I'm kinda torn between that.
Keva:Like, should I wait and get some equipment?
Keva:Or should I just start where I am and use my phone?
Kirsten:Well, my suggestion would be to start and to do just small test
Kirsten:runs, and then do a couple of Lives that are, Lives have an energy and
Kirsten:they have a connection, and people love the intimacy of it and the fact
Kirsten:that it's something where, if something goes wrong, something goes wrong.
Kirsten:I mean, you're a teacher.
Kirsten:You roll with what happens, so you've already got the, the stagecraft of being
Kirsten:able to go, "Oh, somebody's acting up.
Kirsten:Okay."
Keva:Oh yeah
"Let's play," and deal with it.
Kirsten:Yeah, I mean, high school,
Keva:Mm-hmm
Kirsten:You, you've got that in spades.
Kirsten:So, I would say get some, make sure you have some decent
Kirsten:lighting and be lit on both sides.
Kirsten:Obviously, you already know fashion.
Kirsten:You already know your colors, so wearing something that really looks the best on
Kirsten:you and reads will really well on camera.
Keva:Mm-hmm
Kirsten:And then, I'm not sure how it'll look, but you could experiment with the
Kirsten:flipping the camera from facing out to facing in, so that you could film your
Kirsten:clothing, and then flip it around to you, and then push it up a little bit
Kirsten:and go, "Okay, this is what I'm doing."
Kirsten:And have it be little quick, like, two minute hits, just
Kirsten:little, like, sneak shots because
Keva:I love that.
Kirsten:Stuff like that, or just, go ahead.
Keva:No, I was saying I like that.
Keva:That's a great idea.
Kirsten:Have you done any Reels?
Keva:Oh, I do them all the time.
Kirsten:Like anything on Instagram?
Keva:I do them all the time, however,
Kirsten:Okay
Keva:They are, I might just make my clothing come into the beat a different
Keva:way, you know, from the top, from the bottom to the side, or, if somebody sends
Keva:me footage of themselves in my clothing, I will make it a part of the Reel.
Keva:So, yeah, I, I do Reels, like, almost every day.
Keva:I need to do one today.
Kirsten:Oh, wow
Keva:I haven't done one yet.
Kirsten:Really?
Kirsten:Oh, that's fantastic.
Keva:Thank you.
Kirsten:Oh, that's great.
Kirsten:Yeah, that's, that's definitely something that I, I certainly wanna
Kirsten:do more of and that's wonderful.
Kirsten:Yeah, if you get some little candid footage, footage of you, the things
Kirsten:that I found really engaging, and you'll have to kind of determine
Kirsten:what your audience wants, but I love the behind the scenes stuff.
Keva:Mm-hmm, yes
Kirsten:I love the, "Look, I'm packing up."
Keva:Mm-hmmm
Kirsten:"I'm heading off to the show.
Kirsten:Oh, here we are," and that kind of stuff, and just little clips, 15
Kirsten:second clips of that, and then a montage of the photos, might be really,
Keva:Yes
Kirsten:really helpful.
Kirsten:And then that's not a full commitment to Live, but it gets you out
Kirsten:there enough to get some traction.
Keva:That's a great idea.
Keva:I got a little bit.
Keva:I'm sorry, go ahead.
Kirsten:No, no.
Kirsten:You've done a little bit with?
Keva:I've done a little bit of showing them when I'm on my way to
Keva:the Post Office to make deliveries.
Keva:I've done that.
Kirsten:Okay.
Kirsten:And you said you have footage of people wearing your clothes?
Keva:Yes, just a couple, but I, I use them.
Kirsten:Okay
Keva:I use one and over again, because she's so popular.
Kirsten:So, when you're gonna be doing Live events, what kind
Kirsten:of setting is this gonna be at?
Keva:Ooh, that's a great question.
Keva:Well, I'm a really, girly girl, and so, I like the flowers and,
Keva:like, my truck is really gonna be what my personality is like.
Keva:So it's like flowers, if you, if you see my first photo shoot that
Keva:I had for my truck, you'll see.
Keva:It's, like, I had like a floral picnic, and there was a bird cage chair that
Keva:had flowers on the arch of it, and it was just, you know, I had an old, a
Keva:vintage sofa and she was draped over it, and there was a vintage telephone.
Keva:So, I think, I don't, I don't wanna do the same thing every time, but
Keva:I like when old school meets new school, that's kinda my style.
Keva:So, it would probably be a setting where it's really girly.
Keva:It's kind of girly, but playful at the same time, not, not stuffy or boring.
Kirsten:Okay.
Keva:So I've decided.
Kirsten:I think, I think candids definitely will work well for you.
Kirsten:You already have a leg up in that you don't have to get over public speaking.
Kirsten:You already have presenting skills.
Kirsten:So it's kind of the logistics.
Kirsten:And, as always, have a backup plan.
Kirsten:You know, if, because things always go wrong.
Kirsten:I will say that as you start to get more sophisticated with your
Kirsten:equipment, one of the things that is underestimated is how much really goes
Kirsten:into getting a really good green screen.
Keva:Mmmm
Kirsten:So, if you decide to kind of go the full route of full video production,
Kirsten:just be aware that it's really easy to do it and have it not quite work.
Keva:Mmmm
Kirsten:So, having it work really well is a pretty big commitment.
Kirsten:So, I would start with the casual and simple and the phone, and kinda get
Kirsten:your sea legs, and get a feel for what you wanna do, and start incorporating
Kirsten:things in pieces, rather than doing sort of a big leap and a full commitment
Kirsten:into the video production piece.
Keva:I love that.
Kirsten:That's my, that's my suggestion.
Keva:I love that.
Keva:I'm gonna do something
Kirsten:Especially
Keva:Soon, hopefully
Good, good.
Kirsten:Well, you're an entrepreneur and when did you start, is it La
Keva:Le Departique, there we go.
Kirsten:Okay.
Kirsten:See, I, I wrote it down and as soon as I'm looking at my handwriting,
Kirsten:I'm like, "I'm gonna say that wrong.
Kirsten:I am"
Keva:I made that word up.
Kirsten:Le Departique, okay.
Keva:Le Departique
Kirsten:I love it.
Keva:So, I came up with it when I was in school, that's how long this dream
Keva:has been going on forever, but, one day, it's going to be like a department
Keva:store with a boutique atmosphere.
Keva:So, I combined the department store with the boutique and
Keva:came up with Le Departique.
Kirsten:Nice, nice
Keva:Thank you
Kirsten:And, and when did you, when did you kind of kick
Kirsten:off as an entrepreneur fully?
Kirsten:Was that this year?
Kirsten:Was it last year?
Kirsten:Was it
Keva:Fully?
Keva:It was this year in July, July 15th to be exact.
Kirsten:Okay, all right
Keva:My initial plan, my initial plan was to start with the mobile
Keva:boutique, but my carpenter, he fell ill.
Keva:I was taking care of my dad for some years, so it kinda pushed
Keva:everything on the back burner.
Kirsten:Mm-hmm
Keva:But, I just decided to launch online, because, you
Keva:know, time waits for no one.
Keva:So,
Kirsten:Yes
Keva:I started to make my online presence known and then I, you know,
Keva:it's just gonna have to work out.
Keva:So, the truck will be done, prayerfully, by January.
Keva:That's what I'm hoping.
Keva:But I still do events, regardless.
Keva:I pop up.
Keva:I just haul and pop up, you know
So, because the show must go on, so
Exactly.
Kirsten:So, when's your next popup?
Keva:My next popup is gonna be, well, I have one that's kinda
Keva:tentative and I usually go to Trilogy Studios in Annapolis, Maryland at
Keva:the Day Spa, and I pop up there.
Keva:So I may pop up there this Saturday.
Keva:I just have to confirm.
Keva:She, her name is Allison, and she's wonderful.
Keva:She allows me to pop up there at least once a month.
Keva:I just have to confirm that date because I know she's going outta town.
Keva:But my, the next time popping up on a regular basis, a consistent basis,
Keva:is gonna be at the Four Seasons in Georgetown, in Washington, D.C.
Keva:for their Holiday Market, so I'll be there
Kirsten:Ooooo
Keva:For the first three weekends in December.
Kirsten:Oh, fantastic, all right, Four Seasons, Georgetown, D.C.
Kirsten:In December.
Kirsten:That sounds amazing.
Keva:I'm gonna be in one of their, I'm gonna be one of their chalets.
Kirsten:way to come down and see that.
Kirsten:That's, that's perfect.
Keva:I've, I've definitely gotta come see that.
Kirsten:So, my suggestion for that is, since it's D.C.
Kirsten:and the chalet, oh yeah, I would, I would get setting up footage.
Kirsten:I would get travel footage.
Kirsten:I would get some shots of D.C.
Kirsten:and
Keva:Oh yes
Kirsten:Some, just, crowd event stuff, and mix all that in, and go really,
Kirsten:like, old school eighties montage.
Keva:Yes
Kirsten:And just go completely nuts with it.
Keva:Kirsten, you
Kirsten:That's what I do.
Keva:Make me so excited about this.
Keva:I'm so excited.
Keva:I'm pumped
Well, I can't wait to see this.
Kirsten:This is gonna be wonderful, because, I love it, normally when I'm talking with
Kirsten:folks, it's the public speaking part, but in your case, it's the logistics
Kirsten:around what you're gonna do with it and oh, you've got so much you can play with.
Kirsten:It's gonna be great.
Keva:I'll keep you, I'll definitely keep you posted on how things are going.
Keva:Definitely.
Kirsten:All right, fantastic.
Kirsten:Well, I hear, and there we go, I hear my teenager in the background,
Kirsten:so that's sort of a hint that we've come to the end of our time.
Kirsten:Fantastic.
Kirsten:Thank you so much for coming on and letting me have this conversation with
Kirsten:you live and just have people kind of explore this with us as to, you
Kirsten:know, thinking about what you might wanna do with your presenting and,
Kirsten:and your public displays of your, your work, because art and fashion
Keva:Yeah
Kirsten:On the road, I love it.
Kirsten:All right.
Keva:Thank you so much.
Kirsten:Four Seasons, Georgetown, D.C., December.
Keva:Yes
Kirsten:Okay.
Kirsten:We definitely need to get the word out about that because
Kirsten:you need to have big crowds.
Keva:Yes.
Keva:Thank you so much.
Kirsten:Big crowds.
Keva:Yes.
Keva:And do you,
Kirsten:All right, well thank you so much for coming on.
Keva:You're welcome.
Keva:Thank you so much.
Kirsten:I'm sorry, say again?
Keva:I was gonna say, should I give my name just so that they,
Keva:well, I guess I did say it slowly.
Keva:I said Le Departique.
Kirsten:Yes.
Kirsten:So, Le Departique and Keva.
Keva:Yes
Kirsten:Yes, perfect.
Kirsten:All right, and where, where are you, like your website is?
Keva:It's www.ledepartique.com, and my Instagram is Le Departique,
Keva:so that's L E D E P A R T I Q U E.
Kirsten:Fantastic.
Kirsten:All right, so everybody listening, go follow.
Keva:And those of you that are listening, please, as always, come
Kirsten:find us on LinkedIn in the Ongoing Mastery: Presenting & Speaking group.
Kirsten:And, what I'd like you to do on this one, I'm gonna ask you to give me
Kirsten:your favorite concept for what kind of montage video that Keva should make.
Kirsten:What do you think the background music should be?
Kirsten:Let's have that be the question for the week.
Kirsten:Okay,
Keva:I like that.
Kirsten:And we'll go ahead in group and ask that and see what people come up with.
Keva:Yay, thank you.
Kirsten:All right.
Kirsten:Thank you so much for coming on.
Kirsten:I really, really appreciate it.
Keva:I had a ball.
Keva:Thank you so much.
Keva:It was such an honor.
Keva:Thank you so much.
Kirsten:All right.
Kirsten:See everybody next week.
